Well-informed clients are happy clients!
It's natural for our skin to have a reaction to electrolysis treatments. If you know what to expect, your skin will have it's best chance to heal without incident. Don't worry, electrolysis is completely safe. Common and less-than-common skin reactions are outlined here.
Improper after-care is a big contributor to problems, so why go there? Read our aftercare instructions to understand how best to care for your skin after treatment.

Possible skin reactions:
• Redness and sometimes swelling. Your skin is guaranteed to be red after a treatment! This is the most common reaction and nothing to be concerned about. Using an ice pack or cold compress can help bring this down. Redness and swelling is short-lived and usually resolves anywhere from an hour to several hours after treatment.

• Histamine reaction at the follicle. Looks like a welt or hive and appears very quickly after treatment. Usually subsides within hours of treatment. If you're bothered by this reaction, apply a topical antihistamine after treatment, or take an over-the-counter antihistamine prior to treatment. Always read and follow directions on anything you buy over the counter, and ensure you're not allergic before using.

• Scabs. Occasionally, tiny pinpoint scabs can form at the follicles treated. This happens more frequently on body areas, less frequently on the face.
These are nature's way of healing and create no lasting effects IF you use proper aftercare. Above all, do not pick these off! Do keep them moist at all times by washing (not scrubbing) the area gently using a mild soap, or by applying aloe gel or Neosporin® frequently. Let these slough off naturally. Keeping them moist and letting them slough off naturally will not create a scar. Picking at them can cause a scar.

• Tiny pimples/pustules. Caused by bacteria entering the treated follicles or from minute parts of the root sheath left behind after treatment, small pimples can occasionally appear. Keep the area clean, clean, clean. Use antibacterial washes. Avoid sweating and wearing tight clothing.

• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. While the skin heals, excess melanin is produced at the "wound" site. For some people, this appears as a darker spot on your skin at the site of the follicle that was treated. More likely to happen with people having darker skin tones. Can be slow to disappear, but resolves 99.9% of the time.

Here is an in-depth video explaining what's happening in the skin for hyperpigmentation to occur.
